If you are an avid Google Mail user then the free GMail client for S60 3rd Edition should be of interest to you. It is a java based application which will allow you to receive and send emails via Google Mail a lot easier. Of course you can also visit the mobile version of Google Mail on the regular S60 web browser but using that browser can sometimes be a real pain. So the standalone Gmail client is a nice app to have.

After opening this app for the first time you will be asked to log in and after that you can begin to use the actual email client. The Gmail client has the option to pre load the email content so that you don’t have to wait too long to get a look into your in-box. The mails are sorted according to date which is pretty logical since the latest mails are the most relevant to people who are on the go.

Sending emails with the Gmail client isn’t hard to do. You have the possibility to search for a specific contact with the help of a search bar at the top. Writing the mails are also very easy since you get an extra window which takes up the complete screen while typing. It looks almost like the text field where you type your text messages or notes.

The fonts look very clear and are well readable. Navigating through the mail client is smooth and the user interface is pleasant to look at. Overall it shouldn’t be too hard using Gmail effectively.

In this article we take a closer look at the new E-Mail software on the basis of the E75.

To emphasize the importance of the email software it is directly located in the main menu.

When you start the email client you will be able to add several email services of your choice through the “add email wizard”.

Once you start to type in your email address the application automatically recognizes your email service and adds it as an icon in the main email menu like seen in the second screenshot.

There are several things you can do while in the main menu of the email application like synchronizing the email services or connecting or disconnecting them.

There is also a help menu which will tell you things like how to synchronize your services.

When you choose one of your services like Gmail you will be directly taken to the Inbox view.

From there you have access to any other folders like drafts or outbox.

By default your emails are sorted by date but you can rearrange it so that they are sorted by subject, priority, size, etc.

In the inbox you have the option to create new emails or to mark them.

By default the emails are expanded according to their categories. In this screenshot the emails are sorted by date. Naturally you have the ability to collapse them anytime you want so that you can scroll through the emails faster.

When you open an email you have the possibility to add the person from whom you got the email to your address book via the small icon on the right.

The opened emails are not shown in the HTML version by default but you have the option to view it in the HTML version once the email is opened.

Writing an email is pretty easy with this software. There is a somewhat interesting feature in the relation of the recipient field. Once you start typing the name or email address the application starts to search your phone contacts for a match and if there is one it automatically adds the email address.

The new email client has also the usual features like attachments and priorities.

There are several input settings as seen in these screenshots.

The new email software supports copy and paste like all other S60 smart phones which is pretty important when it comes to messaging.

The email settings are divided in Global settings which are for all services and the service specific settings which are for each email service like Hotmail, Gmail, etc.

The options in global settings among others are download notifications, title dividers and body text preview.

In the service specific settings you have the option to change mailbox settings, what to sync and when to sync.

In mailbox settings you can set your display name and signature and have also the option to go to the advanced mailbox settings where you can play with the incoming and outgoing email settings.

In what to sync and when to sync you exactly determine what you want to be synced and when you want it to be synced. This is seems to be pretty useful since it allows the phone to automatically check for new emails.

The email services can be integrated in your home screen. But there are seemingly some little problems. If there is a new email it will be pointed out. Once you are finished viewing it you will only be able to exit the email and not do something else. Another problem is that even if you read the most recent email it still will be shown as a new email until your next sync. This can get pretty irritating. But those seem to be the only problems so far.

The new email client for the E-Series seems to be simple to work with. A newcomer to smart phones should be able adapt to it quickly and experienced users won’t have much to complain about. In cooperation with the E55 and E75 this piece of important software could create a smooth messaging experience for its users.
